A national charity is holding their Mile for Muscles event at Castle Semple Loch, Lochwinnoch on Saturday to help raise awareness of muscular dystrophy (MD).

Muscular Dystrophy Scotland are encouraging everyone to take part whether you would like to run, walk, jump or skip the mile. It promises to be a great day for everyone and those taking part are encouraged to dress up, with a prize on offer for the best dressed.

After the walk is complete there will be a raffle, face painting, home baking and a bottle stall.

Muscular dystrophies are a group of inherited genetic conditions that gradually cause the muscles to weaken, leading to an increasing level of disability. It’s a progressive condition, which means it gets worse over time and often begins by affecting a particular group of muscles, before affecting the muscles more widely.

Some types of MD eventually affect the heart or the muscles used for breathing, at which point the condition becomes life-threatening, there’s no cure for MD, but treatment can help to manage many of the symptoms.

The event will commence at 12pm on Saturday 23rd September and the sponsored mile will be officially opened by Mhairi Black, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire South who will also be taking part in the walk.

Participants can sign up to take part individually or with family, friends and work colleagues as part of a team. To take part the cost is £5 for an adult, £2.50 for children and £10 for a family .

Mhairi Black said: “I was contacted by one of my constituents in Lochwinnoch who brought this event to my attention and requested that I take part. I am more than happy to help raise awareness of muscular dystrophy.

“Muscle wasting conditions affect over 70,000 people in the UK and showing support through an event like the Move a Mile for Muscles event is a great way to get involved and show your support.

“Everyone is welcome, it promises to be a good day, a lot of fun and most importantly it’s all for a great cause”
