A local councillor has welcomed a new online resource that has been launched to let motorists check the safety record of roads in their area.
The interactive Road Crash Index has been created by charity the Road Safety Foundation (RSF) and insurer Ageas to support the RSF’s annual report mapping the risk of death and serious injury on Britain’s roads.
However, SNP Councillor Kenny MacLaren for Paisley Northwest said, that, according to the report, half of all Britain’s road deaths are concentrated on just 10 per cent of the road network.
This year’s RSF report has identified more than 550 sections of road classed as black or red, meaning they pose an “unacceptably high risk” to users. In total they cover less than 4,000 miles of road. Renfrewshire is in the top ten of counties with the most road crashes, coming in 4th out of 78 county areas.
Cllr MacLaren, said: “This Index highlights improvements have been made to road safety in Renfrewshire but more needs to be done.
“Although serious and fatal crashes in the county fell by 27% between 2010-12 and 2013-15, more needs to be done to get Renfrewshire out of the top ten areas with the most road crashes.
“This new Index allows motorists to see how Renfrewshire ranks across the UK and help public agencies focus on areas which need most support.
“It is vital that we are never complacent about road casualties and continue to tackle the causes of life-changing accidents for the benefit of all society.”
