The Renfrewshire SNP group has confirmed that their councillors will not vote to introduce a £50 fee for a parking permit in Paisley.
The permit is currently free but Council officers recommended the introduction of a £50 charge to pay for the permit system.
Cathy McEwan, convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board, said: “After considered thought, the SNP will not be introducing a £50 charge to the parking permits. We understand that this could cause financial burden to many local people and that is not our intention.
“The £50 fee was an officers recommendation and the SNP put this on hold until after the parking review for other parts of Renfrewshire. We have listened to local people and based on the feedback received it is clear that there is no consensus for this. The SNP will not support a charge for parking permits.”
Cllr Iain Nicolson, leader of Renfrewshire Council, said: “Labours failure to invest has left Paisleys parking meters in a poor state. They are completely out of date and this small increase in parking tariffs is necessary to ensure that the parking meters can be maintained. Parking in Paisley will still remain free at weekends under the SNP.”
The announcement comes after SNP councillors said they would vote down the introduction of parking charges in neighbouring Johnstone and Renfrew.
