EMERGENCY EXIT
UPSTARTS ROCK THE BUNGALOW BAR
The Angelic Upstarts on / off gig at the Paisley Bungalow bar in shuttles street finally took to stage along with support act Emergency Exit, where paisley punks revelled along to their favourite songs of old that brought back memories of their youths including me.
Where Tracks like “Teenage Warning” and “I’m an Upstart” I’d long pogo to during my adolescent days at school discos and nights out at the Paisley town hall. Where faded memories I spent with many a punk, to which some are long gone, but the music from those happy time never died ..
The Upstarts from South Shields, English formed back in 1977 during the height of punk with their very own brand of punk rock & Oi! Used their voice to denounce anti-fascist attitudes while promoting the socialist working class philosophy through their music and the many albums the put out over the years that saw various members.
Their original line up had Thomas Mensforth (Mensi) on vocals, Ray Cowie (Mond) on guitar, Steve Forsten on bass and Derek “Decca” Wade on drums. But like so many bands where the decades would see the bands line up change, though Mensi still remains on Vocals. Newer members such as Neil Newton took over the Guitar, John Woodward the Bass and Andy Wilkinson the drummers to continue the Upstart history which is still going strong at that.
First on at the Bungalow was Emergency Exit a 70s cover band who played just about every song in my well listened to MP3 player and were in fact and excellent and tight cover band. This five band comprised of Lynn Ainslie on Vocals, Tom Findlay on Lead Guitar, Jonny Usuck on Rhythm Guitar, Steven Patrick on Bass Guitar and Barry Haywood on Drums. And though they were just the support act, they never played like one and had punks young and old jumping around to their music at this new Bungalow Bar venue.
Paisley during the height of the Sex Pistols and punk inspired many to form their own bands like The Fegs, Defiant Pose, Interzone, Urban Enemies, XS Discharge, Fallout and even my own band, Destroy grew out of those who came before us, during the unrest that was Thatcher’s divided Britain.
Local pubs and youth halls, as well as the land behind the Ferguslie parks F.L.A.G building, where I just happened to live, saw many bands packed on the back of a trailer in what was an open free punk music festival, well documented in the paisley daily express for the controversy it caused.
But their was one venue I never got into let alone get to see the many bands that graced its stage since I was still a school boy, jamming in the Craigalie school G.P room with my band hoping one day to put in an appearance on its stage like so many before me.
A place where every band longed to play and even brought bands from all over the UK hoping to chalk the names in its music venue history like The Clash, The Skids, The Buzzcocks, The Jam and many, many more who went on to fame and fortune and that wee venue was the Bungalow bar..
Though back then the bungalow was on Renfrew road and another band that went onto pop fame was Clare Grogan of Altered Images. I only mention since an old friend of mine “Big Hanny” who ran with The Fegs and Defiant Pose, to which Joe McGlynn played and sang in both those bands while also working in the Bungallow, not to mention poached me from Destroy and into the reformed defiant Pose..
Well Big Hanny once told me during Altered Images Bungalow gig a fight broke out and if you look closely at Clare Grogan’s cheek you can see a wee cut where she was hit with in the face with a glass..
Needless to say those days are long gone and this new venue on shuttle street went off violence free, though the upstarts did bring the house crashing down with their energetic performance throughout the night..
The Upstarts came on just after 10pm and the fans were already bouncing and after the first track Mensi spent a few minutes in light banter with the fans all yelling back in jet. Then passed on his condolences for those no longer with us, one being Pete Shelly on the Buzzcocks who sadly passed away not so long ago.
Then it was right into the show with the band bouncing all night long, but no more so that the fans which saw the bouncers take to the front of stage to stop them falling onto the state. Though at one point as I sat under the guitarist Ray Cowie while shooting the crowed. A couple of pogoing punks fell onto the monitors, knocking over a microphone stand to which I pulled away from Rays guitar.
But it was nothing more than high sprits with no harm done and a great end to this years band shoots. Much like it was the end of the Upstarts Scottish tour as they headed back down south for some relaxation and a great ending for the Bungalow bar. Whom I was told by the manager, was welcome back anytime. Now that’s a Christmas bonus, nice one 😉
