SHAM 69 BUNGALOW BAR SHOW
When Sham 69 entered the Bungalow Bar at 10.15pm on Friday night, the place erupted as they were escorted through the crowed and right past me as I flashed away capturing Jimmy as he walked by. Jimmy Pursey along with his wife waited by the bands dressing room door right of stage as the band started to play. But due to some technical difficulty the gig was held up for a few minutes due to the bass players amp refusing to work, which caused Jimmy to look on unhappily while shaking his head, as though he expected to walk straight onto the stage while the cheers continued during their entrance. But no sooner had the bass came to life causing rapturous cheers from the crowed, Pursey entered the stage with his hands held high to cheers that rang out throughout the bands entire set.
I almost never got to shot this gig, though I’d been in communication with the promoter Bob Williamson of “Restless artists” via facebooks messenger. And even though I was on the guest list and ushered straight into the bar, where I started to shoot the support band “The Mighty Walters Specials” Who themselves were an excellent Ska / Punk tight cover band who went down a storm with everyone in the bar and a great band who managed lift the punters spirits before the main act Sham69 took to the stage. But I was soon pulled aside for shooting the Mighty Walters, by one of the Bungalows security, who asked who I was and why I was taking photos, only to be told I wasn’t aloud too.
So the security guard had the new manager I’d never seen before stick his head around the door behind the bar, where his hand gesture which was a cut across his throat to the security guard, indicating NO! You can’t take photos. SHOCKER!!! It wasn’t till I looked to the side and there was Bob, Restless Artist’s promoter to step in with a warm hand shake saying. “Anyone I say who comes in to a show that I promotes, gets in!” My first encounter with Bob and what a belter at that..
As I got back to the shoot I ran into another photographer who himself was denied access to shoot the event and wasn’t happy since he was friends with the band and later on my facebook pointed out the bars not allowing him to shoot other gigs? The old management seemed to be more open to photographer it seems though just before Christmas as I shot The Angelic Upstarts, the old manager ran over to me where she said, “You can shoot here anytime you want”. Saying that, the bungalow did have a young guy shooting the gig and he was responsible for their social media…
So after the confusion the bungalows security and Sham69 people where truly excellent when allowing me to move around to capture some cracking shots while taking in what was an excellent show. At one point the security rushed to the front of stage as one fan was help aloft with his legs in the air and almost falling onto the stage. This while bottled water splashed all over the place leaving Jimmy soaked but a true professional and the show went on in great spirits. The band played 15 songs till Jimmy then the band exit stage left into the dressing room for about 10 minutes and the fans were going nowhere. Then it was back on to play Hersham Boys. Hersham being the birth play of sham69 to which Jimmy was a founding member and over the years where Jimmy was in and out the band and at one point played with Steve Jones and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols. Then on 2011 Jimmy announced on twitter he would be reforming sham69 with the 1977 band line up members. Though another Sham69 with other later members was still going strong, this forced Jimmy to register the band’s name while referring to themselves as Sham 69 Original 1977 Line Up.
Then the show ended with “Hurry Up Harry” a huge favourite of the band who’d seen five top 20 hits over their career and left the fans wanting more as we all stood around hoping for a second encore which never came, though I was gifted with the bands set list tapped to the guitarists amp.
Talking about amps, While shooting last night Callum’s Cavern in back Sneddon, where Paul Thompson was working the mixer as I shot “Shattered Glass”, “Uncut” and “Vague Reality” three under 18s bands who’d hired the venue to help promote and give young bands a chance to be heard. I ran into Brick Lane’s very own Alan McEwan, whom I’d shoot in the past while playing bass with the Turkey Nuts”. Small world.
Alan pointed out as we sat in the bar with his friends, that he and others are great promoters of young bands and great friends of many of the club owners around paisley to which Bob Williamson was one of them and a great guy at that. Then as was talked about sham69 to which he was a fan of the photos I’d stuck up on my facebook. He pointed out it was Brick Lane who’d supplied the amps back line for Sham69 show at the Bungalow and while in the bar around 1pm before the gig as he set up the gear. The band came in for a sound check, where Sham69 played The Clash, classic song “White Riot”. And while he stood alone watching the band he said, Davy, over the years I’ve played some huge and amazing venues during my long career in music, but this was the most surreal feeling I’ve ever had watching Sham69 play a Clash song where I stood all alone in front of the band. And as for the amp not working, someone forgot to press a little button to turn it on nothing to do with our gear.
What a great end to was was a fantastic weekend in the world of the Paisley music scene..

By the way Alan said his mate bob is looking to take over the wellmeadow church as a venue, but It may not pass planning due the building being attached to the next door flats and noise problems,,, Just hear say so I never mentioned it. Plus as for the coats building they have around 80 odd bands all wanting to play, but its all down to whose promoting and arranging the this. Someone came up with an idea, but as to who was in charge was up in the air… Again hearsay but if you know Alan you could ask him since the coats is an important building
