We hope that you will be able to offer support, perhaps by attendance, perhaps by a message of support. But we would really love you to come along for a morning of direct and appreciated assistance to people who could really use a break. High profile support and patronage is required urgently – but support at whatever level will never be refused.
Substance Misuse and families
Is it the worst thing that can happen to you? Maybe not, but discovering and having to live with an addict in your family must be up there.
Addiction is, of course, a terrible thing and we all hope and pray for recovery.
But what about the life changing, corrosive damage done to Mothers and Fathers, Marriages, Brothers and Sisters, Grandparents? How can live with this changeling whose resemblance to your loved relative has been warped but whose behaviour will result in fear, guilt, shame, worry, stigma – and poverty. Poverty as in financial, and also of the spirit, the wellbeing, family and community cohesiveness, life expectation , physical and mental health , lifespan?
Can you ever be happy again?
If we accept the likely immediate family of each addicted individual as 6 – mother and father, brother and sister, grandparents – then an approximate number of people suffering in this way is 100,000.
The best source of support and protection is a Family Support Group where peer support, practical help and someone to talk to and stand by you for as long as it takes are all available.
There is a need to raise the profile of the Family Support Group, and this is the purpose of the Seminar on 22nd May. On hand will be Family members whose story is told in a short play ‘Fathers Day’, telling the tale of a grandad being blackmailed over his grandchild.
There will also be counsellors and experts to discuss but the most important people will be family members themselves, who need our support and who are also anxious that more people find their way to this lifeline organisation.

LORRAINE WILSON, Treasurer and stalwart of the Family Support Group, died recently and suddenly. She leaves a grieving family, and many friends. Th s event will be dedicated to her memory.
