In March, a group of 10 Clark Contracts employees set themselves a step challenge, where they walked the distance from Paisley to Rome.

Members of the main contractor’s Small Works and Fit Out divisions competed against each other to see who could walk the most steps in the month.

Originally, the challenge was to walk the distance from Clark Contracts’ headquarters in Paisley to Paris, a total of 625 miles, requiring over 8,000 steps per day to each team member. The team exceeded this target and walked a combined 1,422 miles taking them as far as Rome. The average number of steps completed by each team member was 9,500, with the average office worker typically achieving just over 7,500.

The event was coordinated by the company’s Healthy Working Lives group who organise and deliver a variety of health and wellbeing activities and information campaigns within the business. Walking routes from both Clark Contracts’ East and West offices were issued to allow employees to map out their steps.

Managing Director, Gordon Cunningham added, “Through our charity partnership with SAMH and our Healthy Working Lives team, we are consistently thinking of new ideas to promote the importance of mental health and wellbeing to our employees. It is great that our company wide initiative to improve our health and wellbeing has been adopted by our employees.”

Clark Contracts was previously awarded the Silver Award from Healthy Working Lives, which involved making significant investments in promoting positive Mental Health.

The contractor annually invests £750k into training, and since 2023 has made an additional £14k investment in Mental Health Training for staff including Mental Health First Aid, Mental Health Champions, and half-day awareness sessions.

Several physical activities are also offered annually to employees including hill climbs and participation in various events including the Kiltwalk, Great Scottish Run and Tough Mudder.
