Birkmyre 59 – 7 Uddingston
Arnold Clark West Division 2
Saturday 1st March 2025 – KO 2pm

Birkmyre cruised to an emphatic win at the weekend at home to visitors Uddingston. The game was all but over at the half, with the bears leading by 26-0. However, they then ran in a further 5 scores in the second half to take the bonus point win.

It took only 2 minutes for Birkmyre to get on the scoreboard. A tap penalty central on the 22 saw them work the ball left to the returning Cammy Marr, who broke 3 tackles to power over to make it 5-0.

The second try was not dissimilar. A tap penalty this time 5m out saw vice-captain Robbie Espie find the gap after a couple of phases, touching down in a similar spot.

Birkmyre were controlling the game and most of the action was in the Uddingston half. Sustained pressure then saw prop, Fergus Young, use his size & power to go over from inside the 5m line. Espie then doubled his scoring for the day just before the half. From a line out on the visitors 22, the ball went through the backs and from a ruck, Robbie provided the extra man to run in from 10 out.

It took only 2 minutes of the second half for Birkmyre to extend their lead further. It was Cammy Marr again. From an Uddingston goal line drop out, the ball was worked to about 25m out. Marr received the ball then weaved his way through 4 or 5 defenders to slide in close to the posts.

Try of the day went to Adam Hannah on the 52nd minute. Birkmyre won a scrum defending their own try line 5m out. Skipper Ross Moglia, cheekily chipped his opposite number, collected the ball and then galloped to the halfway line. Hannah, running in support, collected the pass and went 50m to score just as he was tackled at the try line.

Uddingston got a score back on the 60th minute from a well worked move before Birkmyre went down to 14 men with sub, Jamie Haran seeing yellow for a deliberate knock on. Despite the disadvantage the Kilmacolm side went on to score again with Owen Nicholas going over from a ruck on the opposition line.

Ross McDonnell and Ross Moglia then finished the scoring with two tries in the last 10 minutes. McDonnell ran in after a “worldie” offload from Cammy Marr and Moglia scored one of his trademark tries, breaking a couple of tackles and going over from 50m out.

The final whistle blew following a successful Chris Vize conversion, who was the 4th kicker of the day.

There are no league matches next weekend due to the internationals. However, Birkmyre are hosting a touring side from Queens University, Charlotte, North Carolina on Sunday at Birkmyre Park. Kick off 1pm.
