McGill’s Buses, which already has depots in Johnstone and Inchinnan, has announced a major £25 million investment in a new base close to Glasgow city centre.
The company has bought a 6.5-acre brownfield site on Kilbirnie Street in Tradeston, just 1.5 miles south of the city centre. The new depot is expected to create up to 850 jobs and will also support McGill’s growing fleet of electric buses.
The site has easy access to the M74, M8 and M77 motorways, a nearby subway station, pedestrian links to Eglinton Street and Albert Drive, and plenty of parking for staff.
McGill’s say the development will help them expand their coach fleet to 300 vehicles, while also acting as a major charging hub for their electric buses. The new base will not affect existing depots.
Ralph Roberts, chairman of McGill’s Group, said the purchase was part of the company’s three-year plan.
“In the last five years we’ve added operations in Dundee, Stirling, Falkirk, Edinburgh, Livingston, Aberdeen, Inverness and now Glasgow,” he said. “With a modern, low-carbon fleet, McGill’s is firmly focused on revolutionising public transport in Scotland.”
