Renfrewshire is set to be hit by severe weather as Storm Amy sweeps across Scotland, with the Met Office issuing yellow warnings for both rain and wind.

The warnings cover Friday 3rd October and Saturday 4th October, with forecasters cautioning that the storm could cause disruption to travel, flooding and possible damage to buildings.

Heavy rain warning

The yellow rain warning is in force from 12:00 Friday until 23:59 Saturday, with the Met Office warning of:

  • Spray and flooding leading to difficult driving conditions and potential road closures.
  • Disruption to rail and bus services.
  • Some communities possibly cut off by flooded roads or landslides.
  • Risk of power cuts and loss of other essential services.
  • Fast-flowing or deep floodwater posing a danger to life.

Strong wind warning

The yellow wind warning is in place from 15:00 Friday until 23:59 Saturday, with forecasters highlighting risks including:

  • Possible damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs.
  • Injuries or danger to life from flying debris.
  • Large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads and seafronts.
  • Disruption to road, rail, air and ferry services.
  • Longer journey times and potential cancellations.

Local forecast

In Paisley and across Renfrewshire, heavy rain is expected to set in from Friday evening and continue overnight into Saturday. Temperatures are set to fall to around 9°C, with rainfall totals building through the night. Winds will strengthen, with gusts strong enough to cause disruption through the early hours of Saturday.

What to do

The Met Office is advising residents to take extra care if travelling, prepare for possible delays to public transport, and be alert to the risk of flooding and falling debris.
