A Renfrewshire mobility charity has spoken out during National Hate Crime Awareness Week after a rise in abusive behaviour towards its members.

Shopmobility Renfrewshire says more people using its mobility scooters have reported being subjected to threatening or insulting comments in recent months. Safety Director Tommy Higgins said the charity is always alert to anything that could put members at risk and will take action against any form of hate crime targeting people with mobility issues.

He believes growing frustration among some motorists could be playing a part, particularly as more drivers are being fined for parking on pavements and dropped kerbs. These obstructions can force mobility scooter users and families with prams onto the road to get past, creating unsafe situations caused by inconsiderate parking.

Tommy said he hopes National Hate Crime Awareness Week will encourage people to reflect on their behaviour and the impact their attitudes can have on others. He also welcomed recent coverage on BBC’s Morning Show, which shone a light on the challenges facing mobility scooter users and helped raise public awareness.

“We will always put the safety of our members first,” he said. “This week offers an important opportunity to stand together against hatred, prejudice and discrimination in all their forms.”
