The Renfrewshire Liberal Democrats have announced that Grant Toghill will stand as the party’s candidate for the Renfrewshire North and Cardonald constituency in next May’s Scottish Parliament election.

Grant, who grew up in Erskine and moved to Bishopton in 2021, works as a software engineer in financial services in Glasgow. Away from work, he volunteers as a local youth group leader and has been involved in a number of local campaigns, including protecting community banking services and supporting efforts to save a local veterans’ care home from closure.

Speaking after his selection, Grant Toghill said: “I’m so proud to be chosen as the candidate for my home area. Having grown up in Erskine and now living in Bishopton, I’ve seen the growth of our communities but also the lack of services to support them.

“I’m standing to fight for a better deal for local people — many of whom have felt completely let down by politics for years, and I can’t blame them.

“Scotland has so much potential, but right now it feels like our country just isn’t working. Bills are soaring, people are waiting too long to see a GP, and councils are struggling to fund basic services.”

Grant added: “The loss of the last bank in Erskine reminded me of when we lost the local police station — vital services that should be protected, not lost.

“I believe Scotland deserves better. A realistic plan. Change with fairness and common sense at its heart. It’s time for change, and by backing me and the Scottish Liberal Democrats in May, people can vote for it.”
