Possible locations for a new Trinity High School have been revealed as part of Renfrewshire Council’s plans for what it describes as the biggest-ever investment in the area’s schools.
Councillors will consider the proposals next week as the council moves forward with its Learning Estate Strategy, which has earmarked an initial £170 million to modernise schools across Renfrewshire.
The current Trinity High School site has been ruled out as too small to rebuild the school there. Instead, three alternative locations within the catchment area have been identified.
These include land at East Craigend in Erskine, land at Barwood in Erskine, and King George V Playing Fields in Renfrew.
Council officials say the King George V Playing Fields site could offer several possibilities, including the option of a joint campus with nearby Renfrew High School if required. This would be explored further as the project develops.
The proposals will be considered by members of the council’s Education and Children’s Services Policy Board when it meets on Thursday 12th March 2026.
If councillors agree to take the plans forward, engagement with affected school communities will take place over the coming months to gather views on the possible options.
Renfrewshire Council says the projects form part of a wider programme to transform schools for future generations of pupils, staff and communities.
Councillor Emma Rodden, the council’s education convener, said: “We are proud to be making the biggest-ever investment in Renfrewshire’s schools which will transform our learning estate for future generations of pupils, staff and wider communities.
“For the past year we have been working through a transparent process to look at all options for each priority project, and find the right one for each community.
“Key to that is making sure we capture views from the public each step of the way before any decisions are made – and if the proposed options are agreed, we’ll be having those conversations over the next few months.”
Outline business cases for the Trinity High project and other priority developments have now been published by the council, setting out the options considered so far and the reasoning behind them.
If the next stage is approved, officers will prepare full business cases for each option. These will include further technical work such as ground investigations and transport studies.
The council expects this work to be completed by early 2027. Councillors would then be asked to agree a single preferred option before any formal consultation takes place later that year.
Any new secondary school building would not be expected to open until after 2030.
| Yesterday we revealed Renfrewshire Council’s plans for Johnstone’s schools. Officials say the town’s seven primary schools are currently operating at only around 68% capacity. Proposals being considered include merging Cochrane Castle with Fordbank, St David’s with St Margaret’s, and Auchenlodment with Thorn, with a new combined school built for the latter. Options are also being explored for the future of Johnstone High School, including refurbishing the current building, rebuilding on the same site, or constructing a new school at Beith Road Playing Fields.
