A council-owned shop in Johnstone will remain in the hands of its current tenant for another 10 years after councillors approved a lease extension.
Renfrewshire Council’s Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board backed the extension for 39 Hallhill Road on Wednesday 18th March.
The report before councillors said Khadim Hussain, who runs the licensed grocery store, had been a tenant since the premises opened in 2016 and was seeking longer-term security.
Under the approved terms, the lease will run for 10 years from 19th January 2026 at an annual rent of £12,500, with rent reviews every five years.
During the meeting, councillor Iain McMillan said the local community knew Mr Hussain as John and described him as well known, well regarded and committed to the area.
He said the shopkeeper employed local staff, had supported fundraising for the local hospice in St Vincent’s and had kept his word over concerns first raised when alcohol sales were introduced.
Councillor McMillan said there had been worries the shop might stay open late into the evening in the middle of a housing area, but said the owner had not done that.
He told the board the business was in a growing area, with more housebuilding nearby and a rising local population, and said he was delighted to see the tenant commit to the next 10 years.
No objections were raised and the board approved the extension.
