Andrew Avenue in Renfrew will keep its current name after councillors agreed to take no further action following a resident consultation.

The issue was discussed at Thursday’s meeting of Renfrewshire Council after a report revealed most residents who responded to a council consultation opposed changing the street’s name.

The consultation had been launched following a council motion approved in December 2025 after concerns were raised over Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly Prince Andrew. The original motion referred to “ongoing national concern regarding his behaviour and character”.

According to the council report, all 52 households on Andrew Avenue were invited to take part in the consultation, which ran between 10th and 31st March using a restricted online voting system limited to residents living on the street.

Twenty-two households responded — a turnout of 42 per cent – Of those:

  • 73 per cent opposed changing the name
  • 18 per cent supported a rename
  • nine per cent reported mixed opinions within the household

Many residents who opposed the proposal raised concerns over the practical impact of changing addresses and official documents.

One resident said: “100% do not want the street renamed due to the extra hassle of changing address with driving licence, insurance, bills etc.”

Another commented: “Life moves on and see it as just a street name. Also I really don’t want the inconvenience of having to change everything my name is on especially when I only did it a year ago moving here.”

Other responses questioned the potential cost of any renaming process, while some residents suggested alternatives such as renaming the street after Saint Andrew instead.

However, not all residents opposed the proposal.

One response stated: “I honestly don’t want my street name to be associated with any (redacted). Please change it and don’t give any person names, just call it some nice flower names…”

Following discussion at Thursday’s meeting, councillors agreed to note the consultation outcome and take no further action, meaning Andrew Avenue will retain its current name.
