Children starting Primary 1 in Renfrewshire will be among around 47,000 pupils receiving a new Welcome to School backpack in August 2027.
Every child starting Primary 1 at a local primary or special school will be eligible for a bag.
The backpacks will come in a variety of colours. They will be lightweight and made from durable, recycled materials.
Each bag will have several compartments and pockets, reflective piping for safety and space for a name tag. A window will allow children to display a drawing to personalise their bag.
The backpacks will contain a pencil case, pens, pencils, coloured crayons, a notebook and a water bottle. They will also include resources to encourage reading, writing and maths at home.
The Scottish Government said it worked with children, families and teachers when developing the plans.
Testing will take place this autumn with children, families, headteachers and Primary 1 teachers. Their feedback will help determine the final design, contents and colour options.
Procurement is under way, with the cost expected to be confirmed when that process is complete.
Eligible families can also receive more than £330 through the Best Start Grant School Age Payment to help with the cost of preparing for primary school.
The payment will be made automatically to eligible parents receiving Scottish Child Payment.
Families may also qualify for the School Clothing Grant, which is worth at least £120 for primary school pupils and £150 for secondary school pupils.

“The SNP is determined to give young Scots the best possible start in life – from the Baby Box, to the School Clothing Grant, Best Start Grant School Age Payments, breakfast clubs and free school meals, the Welcome to School Bag will help ensure that no child’s start to school is determined by their family’s financial circumstances.
“These steps we have taken are vital in our journey to eradicate child poverty, which is why we have prioritised delivering the first bags to reach children by the time they start school next year.
