Initial feedback gathered by Renfrewshire Council has shown strong support for building a new Johnstone High School on its current site.
The findings were discussed at a meeting of Renfrewshire Council’s Education and Children’s Services Policy Board on Thursday 20th August 2026.
The first phase of engagement on the future of Johnstone’s schools began in May and involved school staff, parents, carers, pupils and the local community.
Events were held for different groups, while a survey allowed people who could not attend to submit their views.
Mr Gerard McLaughlin, Head of Education, told the board: “In relation to the secondary, there is strong support for a new building on the current site, which is fit for purpose.”
Three options for the future of Johnstone High are currently being considered.
These are refurbishing the existing building, constructing a new school on the existing site or building a new school at the Beith Road Playing Fields.
No preferred option has been selected.
The engagement also covered the planned redesign of Johnstone’s primary school estate.
Feedback raised questions about proposed class sizes, travel arrangements, additional support needs, early years provision and maintaining the identities of individual school communities.
Council officers said people also wanted the benefits of the existing joint campus arrangements to be retained.
A second phase of engagement is expected to take place around October or November. It will attempt to answer questions raised during the first round of meetings and through written feedback.
Officers are working towards bringing the full business cases back to councillors in August 2027.
A preferred option would still have to be selected before any required formal consultation could take place.
