Primark shoppers in Renfrewshire are set to be offered home delivery after the retailer confirmed plans to introduce the service across Great Britain.
The company has a large store on the lower level of Frasers Plus Braehead, where Click & Collect is already available.
Primark has resisted introducing home delivery for years. It previously said the cost of picking, packing and delivering orders did not make financial sense because of the low prices of its products.
The retailer began testing Click & Collect in 2022. The service allowed customers to order online before visiting a store to collect their purchases.
The trial was initially limited to selected stores and products, but it has since been introduced across Great Britain.
In March 2024, Primark’s then-chief executive Paul Marchant said the trial was going “really well”. He said customers were placing large orders online and often buying more items when they visited stores to collect them.
Primark’s parent company, Associated British Foods, said Click & Collect sales continued to “grow well” in the UK during the latest quarter.
The company now believes changes in online shopping and improvements to its digital services mean home delivery can make a profit.
Associated British Foods said: “Primark’s digital maturity, including the success of Click & Collect, and online market developments, mean there is now the opportunity for profitable growth through the home delivery channel.”
Primark has acquired a highly automated order-processing centre in Sheffield to support the new service. Reuters reported that the facility cost £90million.
No launch date, delivery charges or minimum order value have been announced.
A Primark spokesperson said: “Today we’ve shared our decision to introduce home delivery in Great Britain in the future.
“A lot has changed in online retail in recent years – from how customers want to shop and their expectations on the proposition.
“At the same time, the progress we’ve made digitally, especially the success of Click & Collect, has given us confidence that the time is right.
“Our stores will always be at the heart of Primark, today’s news is about giving customers even more choice in how they shop with us, another exciting way we’re growing Primark.”
