Renfrewshire schools will open as planned on Tuesday 20th October after police confirmed bomb threat emails sent to schools across Scotland were a hoax.

Schools where pupils had already returned from the October break stayed open on Monday and lessons continued.

Renfrewshire Council issued reassurance to families on Monday 19th October, ahead of pupils returning after the October break.

The council said: “The safety and wellbeing of our pupils and staff is always our top priority. We closely follow procedures when incidents like this occur.”

Police Scotland received more than 300 calls after threatening messages were sent to schools across the country, including Glasgow and Edinburgh.

In an update issued at 4pm, Police Scotland said: “Police Scotland received more than 300 calls after threatening messages were sent to a number of schools across Scotland.

“These messages are being treated as a hoax. Officers and staff from Police Scotland’s Cyber and Fraud Unit are carrying out extensive enquiries to establish the source.

“For information about specific schools, contact your local authority.”

The emails targeted primary and secondary schools.

In Edinburgh, where pupils had not yet returned, staff attending an in-service day were asked to work from home. Staff at some Inverclyde schools were also given that option.

Similar hoax emails were sent to around 300 schools in Northern Ireland.
