Road casualties in Renfrewshire halved between April and August, but the number involving children aged 16 and under increased.

Police recorded 33 casualties between 1st April and 31st August 2026, compared with 66 during the same period last year.

One person died, 20 were seriously injured and 12 suffered slight injuries. The previous year’s figures were two deaths, 29 serious injuries and 35 slight injuries.

The figures will go before Renfrewshire Council’s Police and Fire and Rescue Scrutiny Sub-Committee on Tuesday, 27th October 2026.

Casualties involving people aged 16 and under rose from five to nine.

The report says this reinforces the importance of prevention work and early road safety education.

It also records a reduction in casualties involving older drivers aged 66 and over, from 11 to eight.

Of the 33 casualties recorded, 21 occurred on roads with a speed limit of 30mph or lower.

Police say this shows that efforts to reduce casualties cannot focus solely on higher-speed routes.

Officers are continuing targeted patrols and enforcement at locations identified through collision analysis, community concerns and information about speeding, dangerous driving and other risks.

This work is supported by the Road Policing Unit and coordinated through the Renfrewshire Road Safety Partnership.

The report also records 1,725 road traffic offences, a reduction of 7.7%.

It notes that changes in recorded offences can reflect offending levels, enforcement activity, reporting and detection.

The figures are provisional management information from Police Scotland’s internal systems, extracted on 16th September 2026. They are not official statistics.
