Businesses and other organisations in Renfrewshire used 20.3% less electricity in 2024 than in 2012, according to government figures.

They used 413 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity in 2024, down 1% from 2023. The figures include public buildings as well as businesses.

Analysis by Business Energy Consultant puts Renfrewshire 11th out of Scotland’s 32 council areas for business electricity use.

There were 5,269 business electricity meters in Renfrewshire. Average use was 78,441 kilowatt hours (kWh) per meter, compared with a Great Britain average of 61,524 kWh.

The consumption figures come from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

Across Scotland, Clackmannanshire recorded the biggest rise in use since 2012, at 36.5%. Falkirk recorded the biggest fall, at 32.1%.

Separate government figures cited by Business Energy Consultant show the smallest businesses paid an average of 38.36p per kWh in the second quarter of 2026. This was the highest since records began in 2004.

Sam Allcock, of Business Energy Consultant, said: “Every one of those meters belongs to a business that has to renew its energy contract, and there is no price cap to protect them. Small firms are paying more per unit than ever, so the single most useful thing a local business can do is check when its contract ends and get quotes before then.”

The figures were compiled by Business Energy Consultant using government data. More information is available on its website, here www.businessenergyconsultant.co.uk.
