More than 1,400 children and young people received one-to-one support from a school counselling service in Renfrewshire over a year.
The Exchange supported 1,426 pupils between April 2025 and March 2026, according to the council’s education standards and quality report.
The report was presented to Renfrewshire Council’s Education and Children’s Services Policy Board on Thursday, 29th October 2026.
Anxiety remained the leading reason for referrals each quarter.
School counselling is provided through The Exchange and Place2Be across primary, secondary and additional support needs schools.
The report says the services also provided emotional support to groups of pupils and staff following critical incidents in school communities.
It records improvements in wellbeing following counselling, with benefits in areas including anxiety, emotional regulation and trauma-related distress.
Separate funding allowed Place2Be support to continue in three primary schools during 2025/26.
More than 76 children and young people in those schools received support between April 2025 and March 2026.
Of those children, 83% showed improved scores in questionnaires completed by parents about their strengths and difficulties.
The board noted the report, with councillors thanking the staff and partners involved in work across Renfrewshire’s schools.
