Renfrewshire education officers have outlined targeted support after the proportion of S4 pupils achieving level four numeracy fell to 88%.

The figure was down from 91% in 2025 and 92% in 2024, and below the 2026 Scottish figure of 90%.

The results were discussed at Renfrewshire Council’s Education and Children’s Services Policy Board on Thursday, 29th October 2026.

Officers said they had identified the schools and pupils needing particular support, with the issue forming part of meetings about improving young people’s outcomes.

Progress and actions would be revisited in February.

An education officer said: “It is recognised in the report as an area for improvement.”

The support outlined included recovery programmes, staff training, numeracy champions and networks allowing secondary school subject leaders to share approaches that were working.

Officers also pointed to stronger results elsewhere, including numeracy achievements by S5 and S6 pupils.

The papers show that S4 literacy attainment at level five rose from 82% to 85% between 2025 and 2026, ahead of the Scottish figure of 80%.

S4 level five numeracy fell from 72% to 70%, matching the national figure.

The numeracy measures include National 4 and National 5 maths qualifications and other awards containing the required numeracy elements. They are not simply maths exam pass rates.

Councillors praised pupils and school staff for the wider set of qualification results while questioning the areas needing improvement.
