Consultation begins on future of historic Paisley Grammar building

🗓 29/09/2025

Plans for the former Paisley Grammar School building on Glasgow Road went on display on Thursday at the first public consultation event.
The preferred bidder, NIXON, is proposing to retain the B-listed building, designed by architect Thomas Graham Abercrombie and opened in 1898, while developing a mix of private and social housing on the surrounding grounds, which cover around four acres.
The company behind recent housing projects including The Millhouse and Riverside Walk is sharing its proposals with local residents, community groups and Renfrewshire Council. The consultation is being held inside the school and gives people the chance to view the early plans and speak directly with the development team. A second event is planned for Thursday 23rd October.
Renfrewshire Council had invited interest from developers before its infrastructure, land and environment policy board approved the sale of the building, subject to planning permission.
Paisley-born developer Richard McFadzean, managing director of NIXON, said the aim is to preserve the character of the landmark building while introducing affordable housing.
Consultation with stakeholders will continue before a full planning application is submitted later this year.
Paisley Grammar, founded in 1576, is due to relocate to a new £85.5m community campus off Renfrew Road in August 2026.
The redevelopment of the current site is also expected to bring jobs and training opportunities, with commitments to local apprenticeships, placements and work experience through partnerships with job centres and regeneration agencies.
