Pupils at St Anne’s Primary School in Erskine taking part in Fairtrade activities as the school celebrates achieving FairActive status.

Pupils and staff at a primary school in Erskine are celebrating after achieving the next stage of Fairtrade recognition.

St Anne’s Primary School has been awarded FairActive status by the Fairtrade Foundation after gaining two awards within 18 months. The school is one of three in Renfrewshire to reach the second level of the Fairtrade Schools Awards scheme.

Pupils in the school’s Citizenship committee have worked with class teacher Kirsty Fitzpatrick to develop Fairtrade activities and events for the school community since 2024.

As part of the work, pupils organised Fairtrade breakfasts with support from local businesses and created Fairtrade gifts to sell in the school’s enterprise shops.

Primary six and seven pupils also received a visit from Rainbow Turtle, where they learned more about Fairtrade and took part in craft activities.

Acting head teacher Julie Hunter said: “I am incredibly proud of our pupils. Achieving FairActive status is a fantastic reflection of their hard work, teamwork and determination.

“Pupils have developed new skills and gained a deeper understanding of Fairtrade and how it supports communities around the world. They have also developed new skills, such as enterprise and working with local businesses to develop the Fairtrade breakfast events.”

Education convener Councillor Emma Rodden said: “Congratulations to everyone at St Anne’s Primary School on achieving the next level of Fairtrade recognition. The FairActive status reflects the commitment shown by pupils and staff to promoting fairness, global awareness and responsible citizenship among their school community.”
