Recorded sexual crimes in Renfrewshire increased by 37.1% between April and August, according to a police report due before councillors.
Police recorded 244 sexual crimes between 1st April and 31st August 2026, compared with 178 during the same period last year.
The figures will be presented to Renfrewshire Council’s Police and Fire and Rescue Scrutiny Sub-Committee on Tuesday, 27th October 2026.
Police Scotland says a major factor in the increase is a rise of more than 21% in reports of non-recent offences.
More than one in four recorded sexual crimes happened more than a year before they were reported.
The report notes increases in rape, sexual assault, communicating indecently and offences involving the sharing of sexual images.
It says police activity remains focused on safeguarding victims, pursuing offenders and managing registered sex offenders.
Officers are also working with partner agencies to encourage confidence in reporting and improve how risks are identified and managed.
The figures are provisional management information drawn from Police Scotland’s internal systems. They are not official statistics and were extracted on 16th September 2026.
