Figures have been revealed that show staff at Renfrewshire Council have taken 310,853 sick days in five years.

The information was obtained by local newspaper, the Paisley Daily Express, through a Freedom of Information request.

Renfrewshire Council have 6,640 full time workers. That works out at 46 sick days for each member of staff.

When putting the figures into groups, teachers have had the most days off, taking 54,723 days during 2010 and 2015. In the 2014/15 period, teachers had 9,407 days off alone.

A spokesperson for Renfrewshire Council said: “Sick pay costs have steadily declined over the past five years.

“Overall , Renfrewshire ranks 12th out of the 32 Scottish local authorities for sickness absence.

“We have a range of programs in place to support staff.”
