SNP Councillors have spoken out about the quality of repair work carried out on a potholl at Stow Brae, Paisley.
Councillor Kenny MacLaren, the leader of the SNP in Renfrewshire said he reported the poor condition of the road surface in Stow Brae to the relevant council officers, looking for action to be taken to fix potholes in the area.
However, Councillor MacLaren says he was left disappointed when he saw the repairs were of such poor quality that the new tar in the potholes has not been compacted down and is now at a higher level than the actual road.
Yesterday Renfrewshire Council announced a programme of roads maintenance with spending expected to be £6.7million invested in roads across 2017-18.
The repair was witnessed by Councillor Will Mylet who reported that the repairs consisted of some tar being shovelled into the potholes and staff then briefly stamping on the new tar to compact it down. There was no effort to make sure the repair was on the same level as the existing road.
Kenny MacLaren said: “I couldn’t believe how poor the quality of the repair was to the potholes in Stow Brae.
“When I heard the repairs to the potholes were being carried out I was initially pleased. This is quite a busy road linking Canal Street to Causeyside Street and is the only access to Castlegait. However, I soon changed my mind when I saw the poor repair job.
“There is no way that this repair will last. The tar was not compacted down and will probably be lifted by the first car or so that drives over it.
Councillor Mylet said: “I was shocked to see this repair carried out so badly. Basically some workmen jumped out a van, dropped a shovel or two full of tar into the potholes and then proceeded to simply stamp it down into place – no other tools were used.
“It is not surprising that we have problems with potholes in Renfrewshire when you see such shoddy work carried out.”
