Renfrewshire Council will examine whether different funding sources could support community food-growing projects.
Councillor Andy Steel asked officers to investigate the use of employability, environmental and vacant land funding.
The request was made at the Fairer Renfrewshire Sub-committee meeting held online on Wednesday 2nd September 2026.
Councillor Steel raised the issue during a discussion about Renfrewshire’s first Local Good Food Nation Plan, which is expected to be published by 1st April 2028.
He asked whether council land could be used to grow food for people struggling to afford enough to eat.
Councillor Steel said: “I am really interested in that, and I would love to see it pushed further, faster and stronger at a local authority level.
“In terms of funding in COSLA, is there a possibility to explore employability funding to provide staffing for such projects?
“Is there a possibility of using green funds in terms of cutting food miles and carbon emissions?
“Is there a possibility of using vacant and derelict land funding to try to identify places that could be used to provide food for people who do not have enough food?”
Officers agreed to examine the available funding.
They will also consider whether support could come through community benefits or partnerships with local businesses.
An update is expected at the next meeting of the sub-committee.
