Renfrewshire Council has released a statement on school building safety.
“We would like to reassure parents and school staff about the safety of our buildings, after a wall collapsed at Oxgangs Primary School in Edinburgh.
“The City of Edinburgh Council has now shut 17 schools while it carries out safety checks.
“Renfrewshire’s schools are inspected every year and these checks have not highlighted any structural problems.
“Our pupils are currently enjoying their spring break and we anticipate that all of our schools will be open as usual when the holiday ends on Monday 18th April.
“A company called Miller Construction built Oxgangs Primary School and a number of the other schools in Edinburgh where problems have been found.
“On 22nd March, we contacted the Renfrewshire Schools Partnership Ltd (RSP Ltd), the company which owns and is responsible for maintaining Renfrewshire’s public-private partnership (PPP) schools.
“None of the 10 PPP schools in Renfrewshire were built by Miller Construction.
“The council is currently holding talks with RSP Ltd about the firm carrying out inspections on its PPP schools.
“This is on top of the detailed building surveys that were already planned for the summer.
“All new and refurbished schools across Renfrewshire are designed and built to meet Statutory Building Regulations and have all the correct completion certificates in place.”
