Police are investigating the rape of a 27-year-old woman in Elderslie on Monday night.

The woman was attacked as she walked along a footpath around 8pm, known locally as the ‘farm road’ alongside Wallace Primary School.

As she walked, a man struck her, causing her to fall over. The man then subjected the woman to a serious sexual assault.

The suspect is described as a white male aged between 35-50 years old, dark coloured hair, receding on top, medium to stocky build, appeared clean shaven, wearing dark coloured bottoms with light coloured t-shirt.

Officers have cordoned off the path at Byres Road and Glenmalloch Place and have been carrying out door-to-door enquiries and are gathering CCTV footage from around the area in the hope that it provides additional information.

Detective Inspector Harvie said: “This area is well used by local people as a shortcut to nearby shops on Main Street, it is also a popular spot for dog walkers. I am appealing to anyone who may have been in or near to the area yesterday evening, perhaps you saw someone acting a little suspiciously, maybe you saw someone running off, any piece of information could assist our enquiries and I would urge you to contact us.”

“This incident will no doubt be of concern to local residents, however I would like to reassure them that additional officers are patrolling the area and anyone with any concerns should have no hesitation in speaking to them.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact officers at Paisley Police Office via 101. Alternatively, please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be given anonymously.
