Tom Arthur, MSP for Renfrewshire South has backed the right of the Scottish Parliament to call a second independence referendum.

The Scottish Government has published a motion that calls on MSPs to mandate proceedings of a section 30 order, which will ensure that the Scottish Parliament can legislate for a referendum that will give the people of Scotland a choice over their future.

Commenting on the publication of the motion, Tom said:

“MSPs will be asked to give this motion their support, to ensure the people of Scotland have a choice over their future.

“This will occur once the outcome of Brexit negotiations are clear, but before it is too late to change course.

“It is vital that this motion is passed, as it will make Prime Minister Theresa May’s mission to block a referendum democratically unacceptable.

“A hard Brexit that drags Scotland out of the EU and single market could pose our economy with severe difficulty and as this is a path that the people of Scotland opposed overwhelmingly last June – they should have a right to choose a different, better one.

“This crucial decision on our future should not be made by Theresa May – it is one for the people of Scotland to determine and I back the Scottish Government’s call to give them that right”
