Tom Arthur, MSP for Renfrewshire South has welcomed the Scottish Parliament’s decision to mandate proceedings of a section 30 order, allowing legislation for a referendum to give the people of Scotland a choice over their future.
The Scottish Government published its motion calling on MSPs to give the go-ahead for an independence referendum following Tory Prime Minister, Theresa May’s announcement that she will trigger Article 50 on 29th this month – initiating the UK’s exit of the European Union.
Scotland’s over-whelming support to remain in the EU last June has raised questions over the country’s future, ahead of a potentially hard Brexit.
Commenting on the decision Tom said: “Theresa May’s mission to block a referendum is democratically unacceptable, as it goes against the will of the Scottish Parliament.
“Simply hoping for the best is not good enough. A hard Brexit that drags Scotland out of the EU and single market could pose our economy with severe difficulty and as this is a path that the people of Scotland strongly opposed last June, they should have a right to choose a different and better one.
“I welcome the Scottish Parliament’s decision to give them that right”
