Craigielea Care Home residents celebrate French exam success

Craigielea Care Home in Renfrewshire is celebrating a remarkable achievement after four residents successfully earned their SQA National 2 qualification in French.

Frances Duffy, Robert Young, Graeme Scougall and Samantha Harkins were presented with their certificates at a graduation celebration held at the home on Wednesday 27th August.

The success followed a series of 10 language sessions delivered by Lingo Flamingo, a social enterprise that brings language learning into care settings. Tutor Julie Fallon visited the home every fortnight, giving residents the chance to explore French vocabulary, culture and conversation in a fun and accessible way.

While many residents joined in for companionship and enjoyment, Julie spotted four individuals who showed real enthusiasm and confidence. She encouraged them to sit the SQA qualification – which they all passed.

Mairi Ritchie, Service Manager at Craigielea Care Home, said: “We are absolutely thrilled for Frances, Robert, Graeme and Samantha on this remarkable achievement. At Craigielea, we believe learning and growth never stop, and this success shows just how important it is to nurture confidence, curiosity and joy at every stage of life. The residents have been an inspiration to all of us, and we couldn’t be prouder.”

Resident Graeme Scougall added: “I took French at school but never got my Higher. This has been a real opportunity for me. In between classes we have chatted amongst ourselves in French or I’ve just practiced all the words in my head. I’m delighted!”

Each class ended with a French song, which brought plenty of laughter and helped boost confidence along the way.

At Craigielea – part of the Holmes Care Group – learning and personal growth are a key part of life. Residents are encouraged to try new hobbies and revisit old interests, while staff also take part in training and qualifications.
