A serial thug who tried to kill a man in a horror street attack has been jailed for 11 years.

Iain Greig, 31, pounced on Ian Colquhoun in Paisley, Renfrewshire, on 4th May, 2023.

Greig punched, kicked and stamped on the 54-year-old before striking him in the head and neck with a knife.

The victim was found badly injured at the scene before being rushed to hospital. He was left scarred for life.

Greig was sentenced today at the High Court in Glasgow.

He had pled guilty earlier this year at a hearing in Paisley to the attempted murder charge.

Judge William Gallacher had previously called for a full risk assessment to be carried out on Greig after social workers in a pre-sentencing report concluded he was “unmanageable in the community.”

The court heard Greig had only recently been freed from an earlier prison term and was also on bail at the time of the attack.

Judge Gallacher told the hearing Greig had a “dreadful criminal record” having offended “persistently” over the years.

But he said that after careful consideration he had decided not to impose an Order for Lifelong Restriction – a form of life sentence – on the thug.

Instead, Greig was jailed for 11 years and will be monitored for a further eight years on his eventual release.

Judge Gallacher said: “I had the misfortune to see the incident because it was video recorded – your attack on the person you went for was vicious, brutal and continued.

“It involved very serious consequences. In the social work report, I gather that you grasp that, but it does not undo what you did.

“You have previously offended almost the same as this very serious charge before me.

“You have been involved in violence, weapons and various compliance issues with court orders.”

The judge added that the decision he had made was not “an easy one.”

He concluded: “I should say that if you proceed through your sentence, the Parole Board will not remotely consider you for release if you are not complying in prison and doing the things I am told that you are willing to do. This will be monitored.”
