Bank of Scotland customers across Renfrewshire have been left unable to access their money this morning as a major outage hits banking and app services across the UK.

The disruption, caused by an ongoing failure at Amazon Web Services (AWS), has affected digital banking for Bank of Scotland, Halifax and Lloyds.

Popular apps including Snapchat, Roblox, Duolingo, Zoom and Ring doorbells have also been hit, with many users in Renfrewshire reporting connection failures and login issues. Some, however, say they can still access certain services without problems.

Local parents have flagged issues with gaming and social apps used by children and young people, while workers relying on services like Slack, Canva and Zoom have been left unable to log in. Some residents using Ring video doorbells have reported that live feeds will not connect, raising concerns for those who use the cameras for home security or to check in on vulnerable relatives.

Outage tracker Downdetector showed a spike in complaints on Monday morning affecting users in Scotland. The issue has also impacted government websites, online shopping, streaming platforms and fitness apps.

Amazon Web Services has confirmed it is experiencing “significant error rates” in one of its main regions and says engineers are working on recovery. No timescale has been given for a fix.

Residents and businesses who rely on cloud-based services have been urged to expect disruption until systems are restored. Anyone struggling to make payments, access accounts or use essential apps is being advised to try alternative methods where possible or wait until services return.

Renfrewshire News will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
