A case of H5N1 avian influenza has been confirmed in a wild bird at Castle Semple Loch.

Avian flu is an infectious strain of influenza that spreads among birds. While cases in humans are rare, people visiting the area are being urged to take sensible precautions to help prevent the disease spreading further.

Visitors are advised to keep to footpaths and keep dogs on leads, not to feed wild waterfowl, and not to pick up or touch dead or sick wild birds. People should also avoid touching feathers or any surfaces that may be contaminated with bird droppings.

Anyone who keeps poultry or other birds is being reminded to wash their hands and clean and disinfect footwear before tending to their animals.

If dead wild birds are found, they should be reported online or by calling the Defra helpline on 03459 33 55 77.

A Renfrewshire Council spokesperson said: “We are following national guidance in response to this and have displayed information posters around the loch, as well as issued public communications to inform people that avian flu has been detected.”
