One of Scotland’s largest scaffolding providers, JR Scaffold Services, is supporting an essential renovation project at St Fillan’s Church, the oldest church in the Diocese of Paisley.
The firm has installed custom-designed scaffolding at the landmark building, which sits at the entrance to Houston, allowing access to the church roof.
This has enabled the restoration team to fully remove and replace the existing slating, helping to prevent the project from being delayed by winter weather.
The installation took two working weeks to erect, with support from Contracts Director John Jack and in-house Temporary Roof Advisor Owen Stoney, who led the project alongside three scaffolders.
The solution was designed by Gallery Access Solutions and used a mixture of Cuplok scaffolding and Uni Roof by Altrad Dessa. This allowed the structure to be erected at roof level rather than within the limited ground space surrounding the church.
Originally built in 1841, the church sits close to the main road. JR Scaffold Services worked with designers to ensure the scaffolding met all road and pavement regulations. Additional beam work was added to deal with restricted space at the rear of the building.
Temporary Roof Advisor Owen Stoney said: “This was an exciting and complex project to be involved with, as it allowed us to showcase our adaptability and expertise for our client, ensuring that the required scaffolding was erected around the old, iconic building.
“We worked closely with the designers to ensure that everything was set up in a way that provided access for restorations to happen safely for both those working on the church and those using the pavements and roads surrounding the site.”
The JR Group was founded in Govan in 1995 as a scaffolding business and is celebrating 30 years in operation this year. The company is now headquartered in Paisley and has grown into one of Scotland’s largest building and construction firms, employing around 200 staff. The JR Group works with leading UK housebuilders, registered social landlords and private clients across Scotland and the North of England.
