Rail passengers from Renfrewshire face major disruption after a fire and partial building collapse forced the closure of Glasgow Central Station.

Scotland’s busiest railway station will remain closed throughout Monday, 9th March 2026, with no trains running to or from the high-level platforms.

The alarm was raised at around 3.45pm on Sunday, 8th March 2026, after reports of a fire in a vape shop on Union Street, close to the station. The blaze spread into neighbouring Victorian buildings and part of the structure, including a dome at one corner of the building, collapsed.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service initially sent 15 appliances and three high-reach vehicles to tackle the fire. Crews pumped water from the River Clyde in an effort to bring the flames under control.

Emergency crews remain at the scene. Fire chiefs said nine appliances and three high-reach vehicles were still dealing with the incident overnight.

No injuries have been reported.

As a result of the fire, Glasgow Central Station has been closed, with ScotRail confirming that no trains will operate to or from the high-level platforms on Monday.

Trains on the low-level line will continue to run through the station but will not stop, instead calling at Argyle Street and Anderston.

The closure is expected to heavily affect passengers travelling from Renfrewshire stations such as Paisley Gilmour Street, Johnstone, Bishopton and Lochwinnoch, where many services normally terminate at Glasgow Central.

Travel disruption is expected throughout Monday and there is currently no estimate on when the station will reopen.

Despite the damage to neighbouring buildings, Network Rail said it has not identified any significant damage to Glasgow Central Station itself.

ScotRail said limited replacement transport is being arranged and apologised to passengers for the disruption.

Passengers travelling to or from Glasgow are being advised to check their journeys before setting off and allow extra time for travel.

Other rail operators have also confirmed disruption. Avanti West Coast has strongly advised passengers not to travel to or from Glasgow Central, while TransPennine Express said all services between Glasgow Central and Manchester Airport and Liverpool Lime Street will not run on Monday.

The Caledonian Sleeper will instead begin its journey from Edinburgh, with ticket holders able to travel between Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh on late evening ScotRail services before the sleeper departs shortly after midnight.

Services from Glasgow Queen Street station are currently operating as normal.

Passengers whose services are cancelled may be able to use their tickets on other dates if services resume later in the week.
