Renfrewshire Council is to create and maintain a log detailing all artificial intelligence tools used by the authority, along with their safeguards and identified risks.
The plans were considered at the council’s Leadership Board meeting on Wednesday 16 September 2026.
The log will record the purpose and function of each AI tool, the safeguards in place, identified risks and the steps being taken to reduce them.
The council’s six-monthly AI Transparency Report will also include data protection and equality assessments, changes since the previous update, risks, mitigations and recommendations.
An AI Strategic Programme Officer Board will provide strategic direction, financial oversight and risk management.
An AI Programme Delivery Team will monitor day-to-day use, compliance and usage across the council.
An Ethics and Assurance Board will consider issues including GDPR, data protection impact assessments, fairness, transparency, accountability and human oversight.
Head of Corporate Governance Mark Conaghan told councillors: “The report will be on-going and will give members of the board oversight of how AI is being implemented and what uses it is being given.”
The council already uses its AI-powered customer support system, Millie, and has introduced Microsoft Co-pilot Chat for employees.
The next six-monthly update is due in February 2027 and will include the initial log of AI tools.
