Recorded housebreaking crimes in Renfrewshire rose by almost a third between April and August, with the biggest increase involving commercial and public buildings.

Police recorded 105 housebreaking crimes between 1st April and 31st August 2026, an increase of 32.9% compared with the same period last year.

The figures are included in a report going to Renfrewshire Council’s Police and Fire and Rescue Scrutiny Sub-Committee on Tuesday, 27th October 2026.

The increase came as overall crimes of dishonesty fell by 3.9% to 1,584.

Police report reductions in crimes targeting motor vehicles, common theft and shoplifting. Fraud increased by around 12%.

The report says local policing activity is focusing on emerging trends through crime prevention and enforcement work.

This includes dedicated retail crime action plans, supported by the Retail Crime Task Force, to reduce shoplifting and support retailers.

Targeted patrols, operations based on police intelligence and work to manage repeat offenders are also being used to tackle theft and related offences.

Police are providing crime prevention advice to reduce opportunities for offending.

The report also sets out plans for safety sessions aimed at older Renfrewshire residents, covering personal, home and online safety.

The crime figures are provisional management information from Police Scotland’s internal systems. They were extracted on 16th September 2026 and are not official statistics.
