A new festive challenge is encouraging primary school children across Scotland – including schools in Renfrewshire – to get creative while learning about engineering.

Malin Group have launched a Christmas-themed STEM competition inviting pupils in Primary 1 to 6 to design a bench that will be gifted to Golden Friendships, a charity that supports people of all ages in Clydebank. The initiative forms part of the company’s Malin Young Engineers programme, which works with schools to inspire the next generation to consider careers in marine and heavy engineering.

The Glasgow-based firm, which operates worldwide, set up the programme in 2020 after recognising the need to boost local interest in the marine and shipbuilding industry. The competition adds a community twist, combining engineering skills with a meaningful gift for charity users who often experience social isolation.

Golden Friendships provides activities, events and support for people with disabilities, additional support needs, older residents, families and those affected by loneliness. The charity also runs an allotment, and the winning bench will be installed there as a space for members to relax, chat and spend time together.

Helenor Fisher, Director of Marketing and Business Development for Malin Group, said they were inspired by the imagination shown in previous years and are excited to see what local children create.

Jim McLaren, Founder of Golden Friendships, said the charity is looking forward to seeing designs from the community they serve year-round, from holiday breakfasts to discos and free pantomime sessions.

This year’s competition is open now to all children in Primary 1 to 6, and Renfrewshire schools are encouraged to take part. It offers a chance for pupils to learn about engineering, support a charity, and see their ideas brought to life.
