The Paisley Pirates have experienced a powerful week both on and off the ice — marked by sportsmanship, generosity and the loss of a deeply respected member of the club’s family.
Following the theft of two goalie sticks belonging to Pirates netminder Daniel McGowan during the away fixture against Whitley Warriors on 30th November, the hockey community responded in a way that showed the very best of the sport.
After learning that Warriors fans had begun raising funds to replace his equipment, McGowan shared the following message:
“I’ve recently heard about your efforts to raise money to replace my stick, and I just want to say a heartfelt thank you. It’s incredibly kind of you, and I truly appreciate the thought behind it.
“When you travelled to Braehead last week, you brought a brilliant crowd and some great people. We’ve always felt welcomed when we’ve been down to Hillheads as well, and the positive messages online have meant a lot.
“Although losing the stick was disappointing, I know that one person’s actions don’t represent your whole fanbase.
“Because this time of year can be tough for many people, I don’t feel right accepting money for a replacement. Nobody should be out of pocket for me. If possible, I’d love for the funds to be passed on to a local charity instead — that way, something good can come from a poor situation.
“Please don’t take this as me refusing your kindness — it’s very much appreciated. I just feel better knowing the gesture helps others who really need it.
Kind regards,
Daniel McGowan #39”
In support of McGowan’s request, the Paisley Pirates have committed to matching the funds raised, ensuring the final charity donation has an even greater impact.
A club spokesperson said: “On behalf of everyone at the Pirates, we want to echo Daniel’s gratitude. The effort Whitley fans have gone to speaks volumes about the true spirit of the Warriors community. We hope this turns an unfortunate moment into something genuinely positive and highlights the respect both clubs and fanbases have for one another. Competitive on the ice, united off it.”
Sunday night’s home fixture began with a one-minute applause to honour former coach Hector Adam — known affectionately as Harry or Heccy — who sadly passed away earlier this week.
Hector helped shape generations of Paisley players, including current Pirates Chris Turley, Chris Wilson and head coach Ian Turley, all of whom benefited from his guidance as youngsters discovering the sport. His loss has been deeply felt across the wider hockey community.
His daughter has shared that members of the Pirates family — fans and players alike — will be welcome at his funeral, where Hector will make his final journey wearing his Pirates top. The club has thanked the family for the gesture and extended its heartfelt condolences.
On the ice, the Pirates produced a determined and emotionally charged performance to secure a 3–2 victory over Dundee Rockets.
Paisley opened the scoring through Aiden Wilson, who calmly converted a penalty shot. Further goals from Garry Simpson and Mikey Dobson followed as the Pirates battled through a physical contest to secure another valuable two points.
In goal, Daniel McGowan was named Man of the Match after a standout performance, producing several crucial saves in the closing stages.
At the final buzzer, the result was dedicated to Hector, with the club saying: “Hector, we hope you were watching up there — this one’s for you.”
The Pirates return to Braehead Arena on Saturday 14th December for a 6:30pm face-off against the Whitley Warriors, in what promises to be a high-energy and well-supported contest following the events of the past week.
Tickets are on sale now via Fanbase and will also be available on the night, cash only, at the door.
