Renfrewshire’s Provost has wished Scotland good luck ahead of the national team’s opening World Cup match against Haiti this weekend.
Provost of Renfrewshire, Councillor Lorraine Cameron, sent her best wishes to the squad as excitement builds across the area for Scotland’s Summer of Sport.
Renfrewshire residents have already been getting into the tournament spirit, with Renfrew Gala Day taking on a sports theme. The theme will continue across the council’s summer events.
For fans not travelling to the United States, Renfrewshire Council has partnered with Premier Sports to host a fanzone at Braehead Arena for Scotland’s fixtures against Morocco and Brazil.
Extended licensing conditions have also been agreed to support local hospitality businesses and allow fans to enjoy the tournament safely in pubs, clubs and other venues.
Last month, Renfrewshire Council passed a motion congratulating local resident Craig Ferguson, son of council employee Joan, on his charity walk from Los Angeles to Boston in time for Scotland’s opening match.
Craig is now in the final stages of his walk, having reached his £1million fundraising target for SAMH. He is expected to arrive in Boston on Friday at 2pm local time.
Provost Cameron said: “We’re all incredibly proud to see Scotland competing on the world stage and I’d like to wish the team the very best of luck as they kick off their World Cup campaign against Haiti this weekend.
“There’s a real sense of excitement building across Renfrewshire, with residents already getting into the spirit at our summer events.
“It’s fantastic that we’ve been able to support local fans and businesses too, ensuring that everyone can support the team safely from their favourite hospitality venues.
“I’d also like to give special recognition to Craig Ferguson as he completes his incredible charity walk – it’s a remarkable achievement and a great example of the passion and pride people have for Scotland. Congratulations on reaching your goal – we are so proud.
“Let’s get behind the team and make this a Summer of Sport to remember.”
