A much-loved local convenience store has entered a new chapter after 56 years of family ownership.
The owners of Keystore, formerly known as Douglas’s General Store, announced that Friday, June 19, marked their final day of trading before the business passed to new owners Ash and Venkata.
While ownership has changed, the shop remains open and continues to serve the local community.
In a message shared with customers, Avril Cole and Edith Smyth (née Douglas) reflected on more than five decades of family involvement with the business.
They said: “After 56 years in our family (previously known as Douglas’s) and 21 incredible years of us running it as a Keystore, the time has come to pass the baton.
“This decision was not made lightly, but it’s time for a new chapter.”
The family thanked current and former members of staff for their dedication over the years and expressed gratitude to customers who had supported the business through generations.
They said: “For 56 years, this has been so much more than just a shop. It has been a place to catch up, share stories, and support one another through the highs and lows.
“Many of you have become like family to us.”
The family also welcomed new owners Ash and Venkata, saying they were delighted the shop would remain an asset to the area and hoped the community would continue to support it.
They concluded: “This is not goodbye, this is see you later.”
