Johnstone Pipe Band has announced the appointment of Craig Lawrie as its new Leading Drummer at the conclusion of the 2026 season.
Craig joins the Renfrewshire band after a successful spell with Uddingston Pipe Band, where he led the drum corps to multiple drumming titles, including the UK, European, British and World Championships. During the same period, the band was also crowned UK and Scottish champions on two occasions.
He also joins Johnstone as one of the world’s leading solo drummers, having reached the World Solo Drumming Final on five occasions.
The band has also announced a change in leadership, with Keith Bowes Snr handing over to Keith Bowes Jnr.
Johnstone Pipe Band thanked Keith Bowes Snr for his leadership, which dates back to 1994, and said he will continue to play an important role within the organisation. Both Keith Bowes Snr and Keith Bowes Jnr have led the band at several points over many years.
The band also paid tribute to outgoing Leading Drummer Fraser Nicholson for his contribution.
Johnstone Pipe Band said: “Both JPB and our incoming Lead Drummer would like to thank Fraser Nicholson for his outstanding contribution to the band and look forward to his input and transition moving forward. The band will forever be grateful for Fraser’s leadership, commitment and musical input.”
The appointment marks the band’s plans for the future as it prepares for the 2027 season. Johnstone Pipe Band has also invited pipers and drummers interested in joining the band to get in touch with Keith Jnr or Craig.
The band also reflected on a busy couple of weeks, having performed at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Thursday before competing at the Scottish Championships on Saturday.
Johnstone Pipe Band congratulated all prize winners and competitors and said it is now looking ahead to the Grade 2 qualifying competition for the World Pipe Band Championships on Friday, 14th August.
