Concerns have been raised about the standard of work carried out on some empty Renfrewshire Council homes before they are handed over to new tenants.

The issue was raised at the Communities and Housing Policy Board on Tuesday 18th August during discussion of the Tenant Satisfaction Survey 2026.

Councillor Iain McMillan said he had recently visited council properties that had undergone work before being made available to new tenants.

He said: “I have been in a couple of properties recently where they have been void properties, and they have been done up and handed back.”

Councillor McMillan raised concerns about the quality of some of the work, including doors which had sections cut off, unfinished skirting boards, electrical points and plasterwork.

He said: “Some of the workmanship has been absolutely shocking.”

The board heard that properties should not be returned as ready to let if they are in that condition.

A council officer said: “That is not the standard that we would expect.”

The officer agreed to look into the concerns raised and said a new Empty Homes Manager had recently started with the council.

The meeting heard that the new manager would have responsibility for looking at the standard of empty properties and the work carried out before they are offered to new tenants.

The discussion came as the board considered the results of its latest tenant satisfaction survey, which looked at tenants’ views of the council’s housing service.
