Road casualties in Renfrewshire halved between April and August, but the number involving children aged 16 and under increased.

Police recorded 33 casualties between 1st April and 31st August 2026, compared with 66 during the same period last year.

One person died, 20 were seriously injured and 12 suffered slight injuries. The previous year’s figures were two deaths, 29 serious injuries and 35 slight injuries.

The figures were presented to Renfrewshire Council’s Police and Fire and Rescue Scrutiny Sub-Committee on Tuesday, 27th October 2026.

Casualties involving people aged 16 and under rose from five to nine.

The written report says this reinforces the importance of continued prevention work and early road safety education.

Casualties involving older drivers aged 66 and over fell from 11 to eight.

Of the 33 casualties recorded, 21 occurred on roads with a speed limit of 30mph or lower.

Police said efforts to reduce casualties could not focus solely on higher-speed routes.

At the meeting, officers highlighted targeted enforcement, prevention work and engagement with road users.

This work is supported by the Road Policing Unit and coordinated through the Renfrewshire Road Safety Partnership.

The written report also records 1,725 road traffic offences, down 7.7%. It notes that changes in recorded offences can reflect offending levels, enforcement activity, reporting and detection.

The figures are provisional Police Scotland management information, rather than official statistics.
