THE GLASGOW PHOENIX CHOIR is very proud to be performing a concert in Glasgow Royal Concert Hall to celebrate this very special centenary.
Erskine has been caring for veterans in Scotland for 100 years. Founded in 1916 as the Princess Louise Scottish Hospital for Limbless Sailors and Soldiers to help treat the many hundreds of amputees returning from the First World War. Since then veterans’ charity Erskine has cared for over 85,000 ex-service personnel and more recently their spouses.
Erskine provides unrivalled nursing, respite, palliative and dementia care within four care homes; two in Bishopton, one in Glasgow and one in Edinburgh. On the Erskine Estate in Bishopton, there are also 44 cottages that house younger veterans and their families.
Erskine Chief Executive Steve Conway said: “This is an exciting year for residents, staff and volunteers at Erskine as we celebrate 100 years of caring for ex-Servicemen and women in Scotland.
We are delighted The Glasgow Phoenix Choir is performing a special 100th Birthday concert in our honour and are extremely grateful for their wonderful support. It will be a fantastic night which we are sure will be a sell-out.”
The Glasgow Phoenix Choir, with Marilyn J Smith MBE (conductor) and Cameron Murdoch (accompanist and depute conductor), is honoured to be able to celebrate this special anniversary and offer support to Erskine through the proceeds from this gala event. We are delighted to be joined by a host of guests, including the Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, The Military Wives’ Choir – West of Scotland, Inverclyde Voices, A Choired Taste, The Kilmarnock Male Voice Choir, the National Youth Pipe Band and other special guest artists.
Sponsorship by The CO-OPERATIVE FUNERALCARE allows the Choir to take on more fund-raising concerts for many worthy causes such as this and to travel further afield. Our most recent tour allowed us to take part in concerts to raise funds for local charities in Thurso, and to support the Italian Chapel and St Magnus Cathedral, in the Orkney Islands.
The choir has itself raised over £1.5M for many charities in the 65 years of its existence – which resulted in the award of the Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary International.
