An estimated 950 people aged 100 and over were living in Scotland in mid-2025, according to National Records of Scotland (NRS).

The figure was 5% higher than 10 years earlier. Female centenarians outnumbered males by four to one.

Between mid-2015 and mid-2025, the number of male centenarians increased by 17%, compared with a 2% increase in females.

Andrew White, head of population and migration statistics at NRS, said:

“Women still make up most of Scotland’s centenarians, but the number of men in this age group has grown faster over the past decade.

“These statistics help public services prepare for the needs of an ageing population. They inform decisions about housing provision, and the health and social care services people may need.”

The estimates also show Scotland had 48,620 people aged 90 and over in mid-2025, an increase of 22% since mid-2015.

Numbers in this age group grew by 48% for males and 12% for females over the decade.

This year’s publication updates estimates for earlier years. All percentage changes use the revised figures.
